Here&#8217;s why: the traditional SaaS model&#8217;s premium was built on three pillars &#8212; predictable ARR, high gross margins (~80%), and a defensible moat via switching costs. AI is eroding all three simultaneously. Consumption pricing is making ARR unpredictable. AI inference is squeezing gross margins from 80% toward 70-72%. And build-vs-buy is shifting toward build as AI agents make custom software dramatically cheaper to create. The companies that deserve premium multiples in this environment are those solving the knowledge representation problem (Jamin Ball&#8217;s thesis) for irreplaceable vertical domains &#8212; not those bolting LLM wrappers onto existing SaaS products.
